No-fail mocktails for Dry July!

NO-FAIL MOCKTAILS FOR DRY JULY!

Want to enjoy the delightful and refreshing taste of cocktails – but without the alcohol?

In honour of Dry July – where participants give up alcohol throughout the month of July to help raise funds for people affected by cancer – we have sourced our favourite mocktail recipes to give you a tastebud-tingling, liver-loving experience. Bottoms up!

Snuggles on the Beach

As you may have guessed, this is the alcohol-free version of the infamous Sex on the Beach cocktail. Perfect for those times when you just want to spoon…

Version 1

  • 90mL cranberry juice
  • 90mL grapefruit juice
  • 60mL peach nectar

Mix the ingredients and serve over ice.

Version 2

Cuddles are nice, but are you starting to feel perhaps a tad frisky and want to spice things up? Simply add some fizzy drink for that extra sparkle!

  • 60mL cranberry juice
  • 60mL grapefruit juice
  • 60mL peach nectar
  • 60mL lemon/lime soft drink (or tonic/mineral water)

Mix the ingredients and serve over ice.

Virgin Mary

Virgin Mary knows that abstinence makes the heart – not to mention the liver – grow fonder. She is healthier than her more well-known cousin, Bloody Mary, but just as saucy (geddit?)

  • 2 ice cubes
  • 150ml tomato juice
  • Juice from half a lemon
  • 3 dashes Tabasco sauce
  • 6 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • Celery stick and tomato, to garnish

Place ice cubes in a tall glass. Pour the tomato juice over the ice, then add the lemon juice, Tabasco sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper.  Stir and serve with garnish.

Not toddy

An alcohol-free, crockpot (crocktail?) version of the hot toddy which will still warm your insides. Perfect for the cold weather and that Christmas in July feel.

  • 3.75 litres water
  • 8 herbal tea bags
  • 2.5-5 cm fresh ginger, thinly sliced
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  •  cup honey
  • 2 lemons, sliced

Put water, tea bags, ginger, cinnamon and honey in a crockpot on the highest setting. Steep for a couple of hours until hot, then ladle into cups and add lemons. (Serves 12)

Coff-tail

If you need a bit more pep in your step, here is a nice caffeinated mocktail. Introducing the coff-tail!

  • 60 ml of strong brewed coffee or a double espresso shot chilled
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla essence
  • 220ml coconut milk
  • 1 tsp raw honey (or maple syrup)
  • Ice cubes

Mix all ingredients either by hand or using a cocktail shaker. Pour over ice in a tumbler.

Warming Apple Cider

Cider is growing in popularity as an alcoholic drink. However, here is a non-alcoholic version that is warm, just as delicious and a decent contributor towards your 2 & 5!

  • 1 litre apple juice
  • 2 cups water
  • 4 cloves
  • 5 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 orange, sliced (leave skin on)

In large pot, combine apple juice, water, cloves, cinnamon sticks and orange, and bring to a boil. Reduce and simmer for at least 15 minutes.
