10 Delicious Cupcake Decorations

Cupcakes don’t have to always be naughty – but sometimes you can have a little treat! Getting the kids involved in cooking with you can be super fun, albeit slightly messy. We’ve had a hunt around for the best cupcake toppings, and even though it was a complete drag, we set about decorating and photographing for you. I mean, of course we ate them at the end because who wastes food?

Firstly you’ll need a base cupcake recipe, so here are some ingredients for a basic delicious vanilla cupcake.

  • 200g butter, softened
  •  1 3/4 cups (370g) caster sugar
  •  2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste (optional but delicious)
  •  4 eggs
  •  2 3/4 cups (405g) self-raising flour
  •  1 cup (250ml) milk

1. Simply Strawberry

You can either use a plain vanilla icing like we have an add fresh strawberries (or strawberry decorations like below), or you can flavour the icing with some fresh strawberry coulis.

2. Chocoholic

Add some melted chocolate to your icing mix – you can even scatter some choco buttons through your mixture when making the cupcakes. We’ve used some Flake and chocolate sauce for ours.CupCake_Topper_RO

3. Sprinkle me pretty

Everyone loves some hundred and thousands right? You can pick these up from any supermarket and get decorating with a plain or flavoured icing!

4. Popping candy

These will be a huge hit with the kids – and super easy! All you need is to buy a packet of popping candy and sprinkle in on the top of your icing for a huge POP of fun!

5. Very Vanilla

Sometimes something ‘plain’ is nicer right? Definitely add the vanilla paste into your cupcake base for this one, and chuck a little bit through your icing for the perfect, very vanilla treat!

6. Rocky Road

A family favourite, grab yourself some marshmallows, melt some white and dark chocolate and layer on top to your hearts content! Sprinkle for shredded coconut for that extra touch.

7. Bananarama

Similar to the strawberry recipe, add some fresh bananas to the top of a plain icing or instead of the vanilla in your mixture, add some mashed banana instead for a full bananarama hit!

8. Chic a Cherry cola

Actually really just Cherry, but Savage Garden right? We just sliced up a cherry ripe bar and stood all the pieces vertically, with a sprinkle of coconut over the top!

9. Red Velvet

Move over vanilla icing, and welcome to the party cream cheese! For your icing use an electric beater to beat some cream cheese, icing sugar, extra butter and extra vanilla until smooth and lather on. In your base include some cocoa and red food dye for flavour and colour.

10. Snowy Goodness

A little bit of blue food colouring and white chocolate chips in your cupcake base, and this lovely white fondant icing (that you can buy from the supermarket pre made) and you have this snowy heaven!
